First debate topic: Refugee crisis

It is a well known problem most of Europe is facing at the moment. Hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees are fleeing their homeland in hopes of finding a better life in Europe. The destination for most of them is Germany, who is willing to take 800,000  in 2015. That did take a toll on Angela Merkel’s approval. She lost 4 points and now is at 63%.  But some countries are blocking off their borders, making the trip to Europe’s heartland even more difficult. Over 4 million have fled Syria alone. Security is also a problem, with very little background checks countries could be letting in terrorists and criminals.

There is hope though. An Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris recently tweeted.

Greece or Italy sell me an island, ill call its independence and host the migrants and provide jobs for them building their new country.

He believes that an island will cost between 10 and 100 million dollars, plus the millions he is willing to invest. Although he said that refugees will be treated like human beings.

The way they are being treated now, they are being treated like cattle.

But some are still afraid it will be more like a prison than an independent country, and jobs will be forced upon. What do you think must be done to treat this problem? What should countries do to manage this crisis? Also you can talk about why it started and the reasons of them fleeing. What could have been done to prevent this?
